Mark Masselli's Pioneering Work In Health Care
Mark Masselli founded Community Health Center (CHC) in 1972 with the help of a group comprised of college students at Wesleyan University and some community activists. At that time, Community Health Center functioned as a free clinic, and Mark also worked with the National Free Clinic Council in San Francisco to develop more free health care clinics in the United States.
At first, Community Health Center had very limited support from the public because health services which were organized by the community were not given government monies nor did the medical community look on them favorably. Mark remained committed to the idea that health care is a right and not a privilege, and so he built a network of Community Health Center sites which were the best in health care and health care environment to foster dignity and respect for all patients.
Mark was a founding member of several initiatives related to health and human services in the Middletown area, including the Nehemiah Housing Corporation, Oddfellows Youth Playhouse and the New Horizons Battered Women's Shelter. He has conferred with the Dalai Lama and made trips to Tibet, Nepal, India and China, advocating for the Tibetan people. During the eighties, he worked with the Bishop Desmond Tutu Refugee relief agency fighting apartheid in South Africa.
He accepted an appointment as a member of the Medical Assistance Program Oversight Council where he served as a member of the business community. He offered his experience in the management of cost efficiency. Related to that, he will also be on a standing subcommittee which will study and make yearly recommendations to the council on best practices for Medicaid cost savings. In 2009, Mark Masselli received a Doctorate of Human Letters from Wesleyan University because of his many endeavors in the area of health care for all.

Mark Masselli - Involvement With the Community Health Center (CHC)
Community Health Center (CHC) is a first rate health care provider committed to caring for all members of the local community. We focus on improving the health of our patients and our main aim is to build healthy communities.
CHC has been one of Connecticut's leading health care providers since 1972. The practice provides full primary care services in behavioral health, dentistry and medicine.
Community Health Center care is available to all, but we are committed to helping HIV (AIDS) patients and uninsured or under-insured people. CHC is state-wide, non-profit making private independent organization.
In the past twelve months we have provided behavioral health care, dental services and medical care to thousands of patients who live in and around Connecticut City. CHC has one hundred and thirty registered patients and we work hard to keep our community healthy. We promote preventative health care, we treat illness and we assist patients with chronic disease. Community Health Center care offers more than traditional health care providers. New service delivery models have been put into place so that we can treat all patients using the latest state of the art technology.
The CHC is committed to change. We want to transform the way health care is delivered. The company started to provide health care over forty years ago. At that time we focused on giving care to everyone, irrespective of income or ability to pay.
However, the Community Health Center is much larger today. Our mission is to offer the best health care to patients in our community. We live in a changing world, community life has changed and the health care system has progressed. The CHC is continually undergoing change to ensure it keeps pace with the modern world. This is why so many regard our health center as a world class primary care organization.
